Naturopathy

Naturopathic medicine is a primary health care system that blends modern scientific knowledge with traditional and natural forms of medicine. The naturopathic philosophy is to stimulate the healing power of the body and treat the underlying cause of disease. Symptoms of disease are seen as warning signals of improper functioning of the body, and often unfavorable lifestyle habits.

Treating both acute and chronic conditions, naturopathic treatments are chosen based on the individual patient. In addition to diet and lifestyle changes, natural therapies including botanical medicine, nutrition, homeopathy, Chinese medicine, acupuncture, and other modalities may also be used during treatments.

In Canada, the naturopathic medical profession’s infrastructure includes accredited educational institutions, professional licensing, national standards of practice, participation in many federal health committee initiatives, and a commitment to state-of-the-art scientific research.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture is an ancient healing technique that has been used for over 5000 years. It uses very fine needles in specific locations to stimulate the flow of Qi.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, Qi is akin to a 'life energy' that flows through specific channels or meridians. If there is a blockage or stagnation in the flow of Qi, it can result in symptoms such as pain.

Recent research has shown that insertion of acupuncture needles in specific
locations can increase blood flow to the area, promote healing, and decrease the firing of local pain receptors.

Acupuncture is a very diverse treatment tool, and can be extremely helpful in a wide variety of conditions, including:

  • Physical pain (back, knee, neck, etc)
  • Injuries (sports injuries, motor vehicle accidents, etc)
  • Headaches
  • Digestive disorders (IBS, gas, bloating, etc)
  • Nerve pain
  • Muscle tension
  • Stress and anxiety

Acupuncture is a safe and effective tool that can be used in conjunction with other treatments or medications, without having interactions.

  • Grinding of the teeth
  • Misaligned bite
  • Stress
  • Jaw injuries
  • Deterioration of cartilage in the joint
