Fruit and Veggie Cleanse
by Doctor Melanie MacIver

Eat your way to good health with this 5-7 day detox diet

Reduce allergies and inflammation, lose weight and feel better with this cleansing diet. This diet detoxifies the liver, colon and the whole body. The more you eat the more you cleanse!   It is a total of 7 days, with 5 days of just fruits and veggies.
Breakfast: apple or grape juice, 8 or more ounces
Fresh fruit, one pound or more.  All fruits ok except bananas
Herb tea if desired
Snack: pure unsweetened fruit and veggie juice, 8 or more ounces.  If you don’t have a juicer or access to fresh juice make some broth from the recipe below, or as a last resort pure canned/ frozen variety.  The more you eat the more you cleanse.
Recipe for broth
  • 7 carrots
  • a small bunch celery
  • 1 onion
Place in 2 L of hot water and boil for 15 mins
Add:
  • 1/3 bunch parsley
  • Large handful of fresh spinach or kale
  • Broccoli top and stem
  • Few cloves garlic
  • Bit of ginger
  • Optional: any spices, stinging nettles, and any leftover veggie in the fridge.
  • Boil for another 10 mins and strain.  Drink as much as possible.  You can double or triple the recipe and save in the fridge.  Can be had warm or cold. If you can’t make your own organic veggie broth is available in tetra packs at most grocery stores.

Cucumber, any type lettuce, spinach, beets, carrots, celery, cabbage, artichokes, peas, tomato, radish, parsley, onion, okra, dandelion greens, cauliflower, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, pumpkin, kale, chard, turnip, squash
You can add other veggies too, all except no potato or avocado.
Herb tea if desired
Snack
At any time eat all the fresh fruit and veggies you want. Fill up; you are giving your body amazing amounts of vitamins and minerals.
Dinner
2 cups veggie broth
Cooked veggies- 2 or 3 different kinds from list above and cook with bit of coconut oil or steam.
Dessert- any fresh fruit
Herb tea if desired
Snack- broth, juice or fresh fruit
Consider adding whey protein to water, broth or juice.  It increases production of toxin neutralizing amino acids.
Add two tbsp. ground flax 2 x daily to water, juice or broth

Day 6: Add brown rice and hummus in addition to the same fruits and veggies. Try to eat rice at least 20 mins apart from fruits or veggies.  You can season it with any spices, olive oil, Braggs, lemon etc.   Congratulations, you did it!
Day 7: you may add yogurt or cottage cheese for breakfast, and then any lean protein for dinner (chicken, turkey, lamb, fish) Your cleanse is now officially over. Try to carry over some of your newly learned good habits and hopefully some new favorite veggies to add to your usual repertoire.
What to expect from the cleanse: the first day you may feel a slight discomfort from changing your regular mode of eating, but don’t worry. On about the third or forth day the bowels and kidneys will begin to move freely.  Much toxic material will be passed.  There may be symptoms of headache, perhaps nausea, gas, aches and pains, but do not be alarmed, this is nature’s way of cleaning you out.  These symptoms are quite natural and to be expected.  About the fifth day you will feel a surge of energy, you’ll be surprised by yourself!  Your complexion will become clear, your eyes will brighten and you’ll feel wonderfully clean inside.  The little cells that were so full of toxins are now cleansed, and they begin crying out for more food.  Continue on until the end of the sixth or last day, then seek advice about balancing your diet.

Supplements:
Whey protein (we sell small portions for cleansing at the office)
Liver herbs  (Mel’s bitters tincture or Mediherb Liv-ton tablets)
If you have ever have a tendency to constipation get Mediherb Cascara complex
Calming herbs if you are excessively stressed
Anti-inflammatory herbs if you have chronic inflammation, like turmeric (curcumin)
Make sure you get lots of sleep this week, this is part of the cleanse too.
This cleanse is adapted from dr. Neil McKinney’s excellent book
