CBCT is an imaging technique which uses a cone shaped X-ray beam to capture hard tissues of the maxillofacial region in a 3-Dimensional image. CBCT can be used for many clinical applications including diagnosis of pathology/infection, evaluation of sinuses and jaw, treatment planning for dental implants, caries diagnosis and dental trauma.
High quality 3-Dimensional images assist in improved diagnosis in comparison to 2-Dimensional images. 2D images show height and width of hard and soft tissues, but do not show depth. Without depth, Buccal (cheek side), lingual (tongue side) and internal conditions are concealed or distorted in an image. 3D images allow the information to be rotated so that the important information can be seen from any angle. This allows all aspects of the tooth and bone to be seen.
